Cheek cells under the microscope.

Today room 4 were looking at cheek cells. We wanted to see what our cheek cells would look like under the microscope.

Hypothesis: We will see some of the organelle.

Equipment: - Lolly pop stick
                   - Slide
                   - Sodium Chloride
                   - Methylene blue (stain)

Method: First we took the lolly pop stick and rubbed it on the side of our cheek. Then we put it on a slide, he added a drop of sodium chloride and a drop of methylene blue to stain it.

Observation: I saw the membrane, little circles and tiny line like figures.

Why Should We Ban Animal Testing???

Why Should We Ban Animal Testing

Animal testing is when scientists test products on animals. Animal testing should be banned because vertebrae animals could be extinct, animal results are not transferable to humans, and animal testing could be replaced with alternative methods.

Vertebrate animals could extinct due to animal testing. In the U.S, more than 100 million animals are used in animal testing each year. Over 100 million animals that are used in animal testing are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused every year in U.S. labs.

There is no point in animal testing because the results cannot be 100% transferred to humans. An example of this is how edible chocolate can be eaten by humans but not dogs. Aspirin is a household medication taken by humans for pain relief, but this is poisonous for cats.

Animal testing could be replaced with alternative methods. Human tissue sampling and computer modelling. But sadly scientists like to test experiments on innocent animals instead.

Animal testing is cruel, over 100 million animals are being used in animal testing every year. Animal testing can be replaced with human tissue sampling and computer modelling, however, scientist still prefers to test on animals.

Technology wood.

With the help of a pencil I designed a sketch of 8 designs. Oh each design it had to have a housing joint, that has to be possible to create.  I then had to choose one of the designs.

I then wrote a paragraph that explains the reasons for my choice as to why I chose that design: 'What is it?, Why choose it?, Why choose this one?, What is it for?, Who is it for?, How will it be used?, Where will it be used? Is there anything I have to consider for its safe use?'.

I used a bench hook, mallet, tri square, steel ruler, backed saw to make a full size working drawing of my box because .

I used a steel ruler and a tri square to copy the measurements from my drawing onto the piece of wood.

I marked a square line (120) across and using a steel ruler and a tri square.

I cut off the first piece of wood using a machine that cuts wood.

I then marked out the housing joint using pencil, tri square and steel ruler.

Hard Materials_A joint

First I cut the wood 190cm, then I drew joint outlines so I could cut the outline to make a joint, after cutting the join I put to wood pieces to put in the joints. A joint is what connects to pieces of wood together.

KPMG!!!

Today the year 7 & 8 extension group had a choice to go to KPMG. KPMG is a business company. We traveled by bus to get to KPMG in Auckland city. We learnt about the water ways, marine water life, and solutions to problems concerned about earths water. For morning tea we ate fruit kebabs and some scones with butter, jam, and whipped cream.

We then went for a 5 minute walk to a little building called 'Sustainable Coast Lines'. A lady presented a presentation that gave us a lesson on how important and essential water is to our lives.  We also studied about how much water covered our earth. After the presentation we took some photos and walked back to KPMG.

For lunch we ate burgers and some pastry that contained sauce. After eating lunch, we researched about our Atua that was called Tangaroa, Tanagaroa is the god of the ocean but other countries recognise him in different ways, for example Tanagroa is known as the God of the sky in Tonga. We had to design a robot that could help the water ways and do something about the ghost nets in the sea. The robot that was designed to help get ghost nets out of the water and make something useful about it. Sadly it was time to go home, we said thank you and headed back to school at 2:00.

Technology Wood

I have chosen to make a mirror frame for me.
I think this is the best choice because it has a mirror.
It will be used to look at myself, it will also be placed on my dresser.
For this project I will have to consider that I will have to buy a mirror and stick it on the mirror frame.

Why is Science Taught in Schools?

♥My definition of science♥

Science is the study of the things around us. There are different branches of science, this has to do with different jobs like astronomer, botanist, cytologist, biologist, geologist, pathologist, meteorologist, marine biologist, geneticist, epidemiologist, etc… Method of science is ‘Question, hypothesis, experiment and conclusion’. The importance of science is to find how things work.

♥Why is science taught in schools♥

Science is the study of the things around us. There are different types of science. Science can be believed if proven. There is a scientific method of understanding and answering our questions about the world. There are many theories to be tested and answered.

♥Understanding our surroundings♥

Science is the reason why we all can understand the things around us. This is how we can cure people, animals and find solutions to our questions.

♥Technology♥

Science is helped with technology, without it we cannot answer theories and questions. Technology built satellites in space so we could know the surroundings around earth, it also helped us find chemicals with the help of a microscope.

♥Scientific Method♥

To answer our questions we must follow the scientific method ‘question, hypothesis, experiment and conclusion’. Scientists use this method all the time, this is taught in schools throughout the world, once taught, this method can be used in our daily lives.

There are many theories and questions to be answered. Science is still important today in our daily lives.

Measurement!

The tree of life.

This is the tree of life. In 1835, Charles Darwin discovered that all living things are related. Animals, insects and creatures change their internal appearance so they can have a low risk of extincting. This is only 99% proven.

What Is Colonization?

Colonization is when an empire, region or country takes over another region, country or empire. Colonization has been happening for millions and thousands of years. Colonization takes place because it was known to serve natural resources and updated technology. The famous empires are the Ancient Romans, Mongols and Nazi Germany. An example of colonization is when the Ancient Romans colonized the Greeks in 146 BC, and also when the Mongols took over Korea in 1,231. Colonization has a good and bad side, the New Zealand govt is trying to make things right with the 'Waitangi Treaty'.

Response To "Uncontacted Tribes Found In Brazil"

I think these tribes should be response to the article "Uncontacted Tribes Found In Brazil"

These uncontacted tribes in Brazil are extraordinary. I think these tribes should be contacted, don't these tribes have a right to know about the modern society? The people from these uncontacted tribes might have diseases, we can help and cure them with our antibiotics. These people are living in isolation in their unique way of living. We to notify them about this. People are flying across the Amazon Rain forest and taking photos of the tribes. These tribes are being used as if these people are in a museum. We need to contact the tribes.

Story Review_It Used To Be Green Once

The story (It Used To Be Green Once) was written by Patricia Grace. This is a fiction recount. This story is about how a mom shamed and humiliated her kids. Their mom would cut a swimming tog in half and give the top half to the girl and the bottom half to the boy. Each Wednesday she would go shopping and toot her horn while driving to call her neighbours to not what they need. I liked reading this story because these events were very describable the gave me an outlook of the show don’t tell. A message that I discovered from this story is “Life isn’t always what you expect it to be”. I believe that the male author called Witi Ihimaera would preferably want to read this story, he is 75 years old.

Scientist Have Discovered a New Tyrannosaur!

Scientists have obtained evidence of a different Tyrannosaur in Mexico, US. This Tyrannosaur is called Suskityrannus Hazelae, this Tyrannosaur is about 1 meter high at the hip and was probably no longer than 3 meters lengthy. Suskityrannus Hazelae lived earlier in time about 92 million years ago, compared with 8066 million years ago when the biggest Tyrannosaurs existed. The study of Suskityrannus Hazelae can be located in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. The lead author noted on the paper, discovered a number of bones that were used at the confirmation while partaking on a dig expedition in New Mexico’s Zuni Basin. Knowing these bones has been a significant piece of his palaeontology occupation ever since.

My Reflection From Textiles.

A few weeks into term 1 we focused on how to thread the sewing machine and the different types of fabric. Later on, we learned how to sew using a sewing machine. Then we cut out the fabric by 15 inches by 15 inches. On the fabric, we drew an outline of a square by 14 inches by 14 inches, we drew this box to plan where we are going to sew. We then practiced how to sew straight and diagonal on a sheet of paper, after sewing on the sheet of paper we had to show it to Ms. Tuipulotu to check if we knew how to sew properly if she said yes then we could go sew our fabric for the cushion.

During the two weeks of sewing the fabric for the cushion. After sewing, I stuffed my fabric with the wool. After filling my piece of fabric with wool, I came back the next week and sew the hole at the top of the cushion.

How To Be A Leader!

How to be a leader

If you want to be an inspiration for others, if you want to
be a great leader and role model, than follow these 3 great
steps. Leaders are loyal, respectful and responsible role
models to others. It is hard work to become a leader. It
takes time for others to copy a leader as an inspiration.

Firstly you have to be loyal. Loyal is one of the
characteristics that a leader should have. To be loyal you
have be trustworthy, be helpful and show support to
others. For example when you see someone who is in need
of help, you help them out.

Secondly, respectful. Respectful is an obligation that is
required for a leader to have otherwise, has to. A
respectful leader shows active listening, patience and
encouragement.

Thirdly, is the most important job, responsibility. You
cannot be a leader without responsibility. To be
responsible
you have to do things carefully and positively. An act of
responsibility can be acted when someone is doing the
wrong thing and someone tells them to do the write thing
instead.

3 of these roles are very important obligations that a leader
should have. Having an act of loyal, respectful and
responsible attitudes in one are called being a leader.

Poem - Baby blue

Baby blue, as light as the sky, even a shade of a cry. Baby blue looking new, nicely set unto you. The colour of the Hydrangeas that are so nice and blue, as it reminds me of the big bright clues. As we all look into your eyes, we see the reflection of the bright baby blue sky. Watch the blue jays as they spread their wings, flapping them softly as they sing. Hear the baby blue coloured drops dripping from the sky, feel them slowly dropping onto your mind.

Malaga Pasifika My Journey - Pauline

Should Facebook be more vigilant in checking that it’s users are over the age of 13?

Should Facebook be more vigilant in checking that it’s users are over the age of 13?

  1. Chance - I don’t really think there is anything wrong with having Facebook if your under aged. My reason to this is that Facebook actually checks your personal account and they give private reasons of friend requests. Being under aged on a social media account can also be supervised from your parents as well, they can check up on what you are doing. You can get requests from family and people you know but you may need to check with them since there are some people that catfish these days.

  1. Pauline - No, Facebook should not be constantly checking if people’s account is over the age of 13. I say this because how will Facebook know for sure if all the accounts are over the age of 13. Some parent’s Facebook accounts appear to look like it is a child but actually it is not. If Facebook constantly checked its users, than there would be a high possibility of Facebook going too far with people’s privacy.

  1. Amira - If Facebook is checking someone's account and then Facebook gets hacked the hacker can see everything about the person on his or her account. If the person gets a friend request from a stranger that’s a hacker, if they agree the hacker can see everything even if its a private account. What if an adult has made an account and have their profile picture is of their child or them when they were young and Facebook checks there account, it bans them from Facebook so he or she can’t connect to it.

  1. Troy- Under aged kids should be allowed to go on Facebook but they should be supervised by their Parent or Caregiver and they should only friend their family.

Polyfest Schools Day.

What is Polyfest Schools Day? Polyfest Schools Day is when people working for Polyfest invites
